Joachim Thaler - Bronze Medal Winner 2006
Biography:
Name: Joachim Thaler
Date of Birth: 17th of December 1987 à 17 years old
Born in Bregenz on the Lake of Constance (in the very west of Austria)
Current place of residence: Wolfurt (village next to Bregenz)
student; just finished 11th school year (4 years of primary school; 7 years of grammar school à one more year)
Achievements in Memory Sport:
twofold Austrian Junior Champion
finished third in the WMC in 2004
reigning Junior World Memory Champion
current holder of six Junior World Records
number six on the world ranking list
“Grandmaster of Memory”
My ambitions:
Saying that I don’t have any and that I’ll just have a look at how well I’m going to do at the next WMC would be a lie. Of course I’d be happy to “memorise” myself closer to the top of the world ranking list. Still, there are other things in my life that are important for me too and that I won’t give up just in order to practise memory sport all day. My number one ambition, however, is to stay on the ball as long as possible to have the possibility to enjoy all the wonderful, great and inspiring people that I would never have met without memory sport.
How has the mind sport of memory affected my life?
I learned what unbelievable achievements the human brain is up to.
I got to know some of the most interesting people I have ever met. Generally, it’s the social contacts that I enjoy most about the sport: People don’t fight each other, trying to keep their techniques secret – they support, motivate and give advice to each other. Apart from that, I just love being together with all these like-minded freaks (well, I think that’s the word that describes us memory athletes best) – they are simply cool. And that’s the main reason why I’m looking forward to each event.
I learned how to deal with the media.
I earned money (prize money, memory course for children, performances etc.)
I earned respect and admiration.
